YWCA Board of Directors#ONAMISSION since March of 2021How did you first get involved at the YWCA?I started volunteering on the That's What She Said (formerly Women's Night Out) event committee.Who is the woman you look up to the most and why?
My mother, who spent her life in high-risk elementary schools and spends her retirement volunteering for the Poor People's Campaign and engaging in civil disobedience.
What are you most proud of in your work with the YWCA?I'm proud I can bring my life experience and use my knowledge to help advance the mission.What is one thing you’ve learned in your time on the board?You may not think you're "qualified" - but you bring your own perspective and experiences to the group, which is valuable.
What drives you to do this work?Everyone deserves respect and dignity, and if I were in need I would want an organization like the YWCA readily available as a resource. The biggest challenge facing the YWCA mission is apathy - so many times people think they can't contribute to a cause or change their ways because they won't take the next step. We have to motivate and educate to change this around.What do you like to do for fun?
I love spending time with my loved ones and my dog. I spend A LOT of time with the wonderful women in my life - my mom, my grandma, and my friends. They are intelligent, funny, and empowering!
Who do you look up to or feel inspired by within the YWCA?Alison Pollock, former YWCA Board of Directors President, who inspired me to start volunteering. She does the work: volunteering, donating, and showing up. She's incredibly busy and accomplished but makes time to contribute whatever is needed. Her energy and work ethic are inspiring!Any other words of wisdom?Even a small thing - showing up for an event, giving $10, informing someone about the YWCA - can make a huge difference!!!
